Are mesh panels compliant with international fire safety standards?

Aluminum mesh panels themselves are non-combustible, but the complete assembly must comply with international fire-safety standards. In Europe, the core metric is EN 13501-1: panels and backing materials must achieve at least Euroclass A2-s1,d0 (limited combustibility, low smoke, no droplets). In North America, ASTM E84 (surface spread of flame) reports a Class A flame spread index (≤ 25) and smoke-developed index (≤ 450). Tall façade assemblies often require full-scale NFPA 285 or ASTM E2307 testing to verify vertical and horizontal flame propagation in multi-story applications. To achieve compliance, combine aluminum mesh with non-combustible backing—such as mineral wool or calcium-silicate boards—and seal penetrations with intumescent firestops. All fastening and framing components should be metal or high-temperature-rated. Maintain detailed shop drawings and third-party test reports to document compliance. By designing mesh panel systems around recognized fire-safety protocols and certified materials, architects can ensure global regulatory acceptance and occupant safety.
