While fire resistance primarily addresses flame and heat, smoke migration poses serious hazards. Fire-rated ceilings can include smoke-control features by integrating perimeter gaskets, smoke-stop sealants, and gasketed grid systems tested for air leakage. Under standards like ASTM E283 or EN 12101-1, assemblies are classified for smoke leakage. Proprietary smoke seals—often neoprene or silicone gasketing fitted into grid flanges—prevent smoke passage at perimeters. Intumescent joint strips also block hot gases between panels. For combined fire and smoke rating, specify a system with documented S classification (e.g., E120/S120), meaning 120 minutes of fire resistance and <3 cfm/ft² leakage. Proper installation and inspection of gasket placement are critical; missing or misaligned seals can compromise smoke control even if fire rating remains intact.
