Coastal environments pose elevated corrosion risks due to salt-laden air, high humidity, and UV exposure. Aluminum mesh panels, when engineered for these conditions, can offer long-term performance and minimal maintenance. Begin by specifying marine-grade aluminum alloys such as 5000 series (e.g., 5052 or 5083), which offer superior corrosion resistance compared to general-purpose 3000 series alloys. Apply an industry-standard architectural anodized finish (Class I, 25 µm thickness) or a high-performance fluoropolymer (PVDF) powder coating, both of which provide exceptional barrier protection against salt spray and UV degradation. Ensure proper panel drainage and airflow behind the mesh to avoid water retention; incorporate drip edges and weep holes in the supporting frame. Periodic rinsing with fresh water—ideally quarterly—removes salt buildup and prolongs finish life. For critical structures, consider sacrificial zinc anodes strategically placed within the framing to offer cathodic protection. By selecting the right alloy, protective coating, and maintenance routine, aluminum mesh panels can withstand harsh coastal conditions for decades without significant corrosion or aesthetic damage.
