Perforations introduce voids that can compromise fire barriers, but they remain compatible if engineered correctly. The perforated aluminum panel itself is non-combustible; however, its openings require a fire-resistant backing to maintain integrity and insulation. Manufacturers apply intumescent coatings or laminated fire-rated membranes behind the perforations, which expand under heat to seal holes and prevent flame passage. Behind that, mineral wool or gypsum boards provide thermal mass. The entire system—including panel, coating, insulation, grid, and sealants—must pass the full-scale fire test under applicable standards (ASTM E119, EN 1364-2). Perforation geometry (hole size, pattern, open area percentage) is specified and tested; any deviation in size or backing void can void the rating. When assembled per tested details, perforated aluminum panels perform equivalently to solid panels in fire-rated applications.
