Rainscreen metal wall systems are a robust strategy to prevent moisture-related damage in mixed-climate regions where buildings face both driving rain and seasonal humidity. The rainscreen principle separates the outer weather-exposed cladding from the inner structural wall with a ventilated cavity that allows moisture drained or evaporated across the back surface of the cladding to escape. This cavity equalizes pressure, reducing water ingress through joints during wind-driven rain events and preventing moisture from being driven into the insulation or structural substrate. In mixed climates—where temperature and relative humidity vary seasonally, such as transitional zones between arid Gulf climates and cooler highlands—rainscreens prevent interstitial condensation by allowing vapors to ventilate and by enabling controlled drying. Properly designed drainage planes, weep paths, and breathable air/vapor control layers are essential to guide moisture out of the assembly. Metal cladding in rainscreen systems must be paired with corrosion-resistant materials and robust flashings at penetrations, windows, and transitions to prevent localized failures. Rainscreens also allow the outer metal skin to act sacrificially—bearing weathering and abrasion while the inner assembly remains protected—simplifying maintenance and enhancing the building’s long-term resilience across diverse climate conditions.
