Aluminum ceiling grids are inherently non-combustible, making them an excellent framework for fire-resistant panels. When specifying a fire-rated ceiling assembly, verify that both the grid and panels carry compatible ratings—typically UL Class A or ASTM E84 Class A. Fire-rated panels often comprise mineral fiber or gypsum cores with foil or painted aluminium facing. The grid must support the additional weight and thickness of these panels, which can range from 8 mm to 20 mm.
Select grid members with a load capacity exceeding the panel dead load by at least 50%. Main runners spaced at 1200 mm and cross tees at 600 mm centers are standard, but closer spacing (e.g., 400 mm) may be required for heavier panels. Clips or seismic restraints ensure panels remain in place during fire-induced thermal expansion or seismic events.
Install firestopping seals at perimeters and penetrations to restore compartmentation. Expansion joints in the grid allow for material movement without compromising integrity. Finally, coordinate with the fire protection engineer to ensure sprinkler deflectors clear the grid depth.
