PRANCE metalwork is a leading manufacturer of metal ceiling and facade systems.
Suspended ceiling tiles can be fire rated, provided they are tested and certified within a complete fire-resistance assembly. Aluminum suspended ceiling tiles typically feature a noncombustible or fire-retardant core and surface treatment that resist heat transfer and flame spread. Testing under UL 263 or ASTM E119 measures the time the assembly can withstand fire exposure, often resulting in 1-hour or 2-hour ratings. The tiles must be installed in a matching aluminum suspension grid and perimeter trim that were tested together, maintaining the integrity of the rated barrier. Sealing of gaps around tiles, borders, and penetrations is essential—intumescent strips or fire-rated sealants expand to close openings during a fire. When specified and installed correctly, fire-rated suspended ceiling tiles in aluminum systems contribute to building compartmentation, occupant safety, and code compliance. Regular inspections ensure that any modifications or damage do not compromise the system’s fire rating.
