PRANCE metalwork is a leading manufacturer of metal ceiling and facade systems.
Cigarette smoke can migrate through perforations in acoustic ceiling tiles, including those made from aluminum, as air and particles pass freely through open holes. While aluminum panels resist staining and are easy to clean, the perforations themselves do not act as barriers to smoke or odors. To minimize smoke infiltration into plenum spaces or adjacent rooms, install specialized smoke baffles or fire-rated backer boards behind the acoustic tiles. These baffles attach to the ceiling grid and close off air pathways without significantly impacting acoustic performance. Additionally, seal perimeter gaps around the ceiling system using intumescent sealants or gaskets to prevent smoke bypass. In smoking-permitted areas, consider ceiling diffusers or dedicated exhaust vents above the acoustic system to capture and remove smoke before it disperses. Regular cleaning of aluminum panels also helps maintain appearance, as surfaces can be wiped down to remove nicotine residues. By combining aluminum acoustic tiles with smoke control accessories and proper HVAC design, you can limit smoke migration while retaining the acoustic benefits of the ceiling system.
