PRANCE metalwork is a leading manufacturer of metal ceiling and facade systems.
Whether a ceiling needs to be fire rated depends on its location, building occupancy, and fire separation requirements. Fire rated ceilings act as horizontal fire barriers, preventing fire and smoke from spreading between floors or compartments. Under IBC and NFPA codes, rated ceilings are mandated above exit corridors, stair enclosures, elevator hoistways, and certain tenant separation walls that extend to the underside of the floor deck. In high-occupancy or high-rise buildings, fire-rated ceilings of 1-hour or 2-hour are common in corridors and service areas. For aluminum ceiling systems, specifying a UL 263 or ASTM E119 tested assembly ensures the ceiling meets required ratings. Non-rated decorative ceilings may be permissible in open-plan offices or retail spaces where no fire separation is required. Always consult local code and your AHJ to determine if fire-rated ceilings are necessary in specific areas of your project.
