A curtain wall is the non-structural outer covering of a building, designed to keep out rain, wind, and noise while letting in daylight. It’s constructed from lightweight aluminum mullions and transoms supporting glass panels or other cladding. Because curtain walls do not bear the weight of floors or roofs, they can be made of larger glass expanses than traditional walls. The system is engineered to withstand wind loads and accommodate building movements through flexible connections. Internal gaskets ensure airtightness, and drainage channels remove infiltrating water. Glass curtain walls can incorporate double- or triple-glazed units with low-emissivity coatings to optimize thermal performance and occupant comfort.
