A suspended ceiling consists of a supporting grid and the tiles or panels installed within it. The grid forms the supporting framework, while the tiles or panels create the visible ceiling surface. This means drop ceiling grid materials and ceiling tile materials need to be considered separately.

Most commercial T-bar ceiling grids use galvanized steel as the standard material. Aluminum is more often considered where lower weight, corrosion resistance, or an exposed finish matters. Ceiling tiles may be mineral fiber, stone wool, fiberglass, metal, or gypsum.
