How high should upper cabinets be mounted from the ceiling?

18 inches is typically the space between upper cabinets and the work surface. Ideally there should be between 30 to 36 inches of space in between the top edge of your cabinets/high furniture and ceilings– but this is not a hard rule. If you want a clean, continuous look you can install cupboards straight up to the ceiling. However, this means that your measurements have to be very accurate.
