Achieving excellent sound absorption with metal suspended ceilings involves more than leaving gaps between panels. Perforated aluminum panels combined with acoustic backing deliver both aesthetics and performance. Choose panels with micro-perforations (hole diameter 0.8–1.5 mm, 10–20% open area) or slot patterns designed for mid- and high-frequency absorption. Behind the panel, install an acoustic fleece or mineral wool layer of at least 25–50 mm thickness, secured on a non-woven fabric facing to prevent fiber migration. Maintain a plenum depth of 100–150 mm between panels and concrete slab to create an air cavity that enhances low-frequency absorption. Seal perimeter gaps with acoustic sealant to prevent flanking noise. For critical environments, such as recording studios or auditoriums, model the room acoustics using software (e.g., EASE) to fine-tune perforation density and backing thickness. Regularly inspect the fleece for compression or moisture, replacing it as needed. This integrated approach retains the sleek look of metal ceilings while delivering targeted noise control.
