PRANCE metalwork is a leading manufacturer of metal ceiling and facade systems.
From our perspective as an aluminum ceiling manufacturer supplying facilities in Dubai, Muscat and Jeddah, the maintenance differences between plank ceilings and egg crate ceilings are significant and influence total lifecycle cost. Plank ceilings with removable modular panels are straightforward to clean and maintain: panels can be detached for maintenance of services, replaced individually if damaged, and cleaned with standard non-abrasive detergents. Factory-applied coatings on aluminum reduce the need for frequent repainting. Egg crate ceilings (grid-like open cells), while offering good light diffusion and a distinctive look, have more exposed internal surfaces and many small ledges that collect dust, grease and insects—this makes routine cleaning more labor intensive, which is an important operational cost for shopping malls in Abu Dhabi or food-service areas in Dubai. Egg crate modules may be harder to remove without dismantling adjacent cells, increasing downtime during service access. Additionally, in coastal areas like Jeddah, salt-laden dust can accelerate corrosion in poorly protected grids; specifying marine-grade aluminum and sealed edges for egg crate panels mitigates but does not eliminate the maintenance burden. For acoustic needs, perforated planks with replaceable acoustic backing may require periodic replacement of absorptive materials, but the process is typically simpler than deep cleaning an egg crate matrix. In summary, plank ceilings generally offer lower ongoing maintenance and easier access, while egg crate ceilings demand more frequent cleaning and careful detailing for serviceability.
