Can you integrate lighting fixtures into fire rated ceilings safely?
Integrating lighting into fire-rated ceilings demands fire-rated components and strict adherence to tested details. Standard recessed fixtures create openings that allow heat and flame to penetrate. To maintain rating, install UL Listed fire-rated housings or plaster frames designed to fit within the ceiling panel cutout. These housings contain intumescent pads that expand under fire, sealing the perimeter of the fixture. Seal any gaps with approved fire-stop sealants. Clearances around fixtures must match those in the fire test (often 25–30 mm), and the insulation above the fixture must remain undisturbed or be replaced with a compatible fire-rated insulation collar. All fixture penetrations should be documented, and the installer must verify that the lighting assembly is included in the fire-rated system’s official test report.
