What are the main structural differences between stick and unitized curtain wall systems?

As an aluminum façade manufacturer working across the Middle East and Central Asia (including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan), we often advise clients on the fundamental structural differences between stick and unitized curtain wall systems. A stick system is built on-site by assembling vertical mullions, horizontal transoms, and glazing piece-by-piece — essentially constructing the façade in strips. Unitized systems, by contrast, are prefabricated large modules (panels) that integrate frames, insulation, glazing, and gaskets in factory-controlled conditions and are lifted into place as complete units.

What are the main structural differences between stick and unitized curtain wall systems? 1

From a structural standpoint, stick systems rely more on careful on-site alignment and sealant continuity across many joints; they are flexible for phased projects and sites with restricted crane access. Unitized systems concentrate structural connections at module perimeters and rely on engineered module interfaces to transfer loads (wind, gravity, seismic) to the building structure, enabling tighter control of deflection, thermal breaks, and air/water sealing.

For tall buildings in the Gulf (e.g., Dubai, Doha) and Central Asian cities like Almaty, unitized façades often perform better in repetitive load environments because factory-assembled corners, continuous thermal breaks, and pre-compressed gaskets reduce variability. Stick systems can still be ideal for low-to-mid rise projects, irregular geometries, or retrofit works where large modules cannot be craned or transported.

As a manufacturer, we tailor structural profiles (extrusion thickness, thermal break design, gasket geometry) to meet project wind loads and seismic requirements. We also provide engineering support to verify module-to-structure connections, especially under strict codes used in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and regions of Kazakhstan. In short: stick = site-assembled flexibility; unitized = factory-controlled consistency and superior repeatable performance for high-rise aluminum façades.
