What is the difference between exterior wall and cladding?
Exterior walls serve as the structural barrier—bearing vertical and lateral loads, insulating interiors, and supporting windows and doors. They consist of concrete, masonry, or framed systems designed for strength and fire resistance. Cladding, conversely, is a non-structural layer affixed to the exterior wall to enhance weatherproofing, thermal performance, and aesthetic appeal. In aluminum facade systems, aluminum panels attach to exterior walls via subframes, creating a ventilated rainscreen that protects the primary structure while allowing air circulation. This separation of functions enables the structural wall to focus on load-bearing, while aluminum cladding optimizes envelope performance and design flexibility.
