Robust testing and mock-up procedures are vital to verify curtain wall performance prior to full installation. Start with laboratory tests for components and assemblies to internationally recognised standards: air infiltration (ASTM E283 / EN 12152), water penetration (ASTM E331 / EN 12155), structural wind load (ASTM E330 / EN 12179), and cyclic movement tests for joints. Fabricate a full-scale mock-up that replicates typical conditions, including mullion spans, glazing, junctions, and penetrations. Perform laboratory or field water penetration tests on the mock-up under prescribed pressures and durations; follow up with air leakage testing to confirm airtightness thresholds. Structural verification may include deflection testing and load application to demonstrate conformance with design criteria. Mock-ups should be inspected for fabrication tolerances, finish quality, and interface compatibility with adjacent trades. Where project risk is high, require cyclic environmental testing (e.g., thermal cycling and movement cycles) and dynamic testing to simulate wind and seismic effects. Document remediation steps if tests reveal failures and require revised mock-ups. In addition, specify factory quality control audits such as ISO 9001 and production sampling, plus final pre-shipment inspections. Onsite, after install, repeat air and water tests on representative areas and perform visual inspections to verify drainage paths and sealant application. Contracts should define acceptance criteria, testing responsibilities, and who bears the cost of remedial work if benchmarks are not met.
